Perfect Apple Pie, Better Homes & Gardens Dessert Cookbook, 1960
Caption on the picture reads – Juicy apple slices bubble and bake with sugar and spice inside their flaky pastry coverlet. Top the warm pie wedges with cheese cornucopias: Roll up process cheese slice: peg with cloves.
Now I am originally from the New England area, so a slice of cheddar cheese with your apple pie is not crazy talk. I always remember some sharp New York cheddar getting sliced up as the pie was being portioned. I just can’t get past the fact that it is a glistening, super soft slice of process cheese being used. A Kraft single sitting atop your gorgeous homemade pie adorned with a clove. Imagine all those flavors mingling in your mouth – the delicious tart yet sweet apple pie filling, the buttery, flaky crust, the hint of clove and then the not quite but maybe cheese flavor of the processed cheese. Picture it……I DARE YOU!
Before anyone thinks I am a cheese snob, I have no problem with processed cheese. I think it has a time and a place in the food world. Throw it on an egg and sausage breakfast sandwich and I won’t complain. Make mac and cheese with Velveeta and I will still eat it. Just leave it off the apple pie I guess? Unless its your thing, then you savor every bite of that apple pie.
How do you feel about process cheese on top of your apple pie? Do you think it is strange even with the cheddar cheese? Do you even like apple pie? (Admittedly I’m not a big fan……)
