The History of Better Than Sex Cake

April 1, 2022August 4, 20221 Comment

Next up in my little trip into 1980s dessert trends is a cake with a cheeky name. Better Than Sex cake was definitely not a cake I heard of till probably I started collecting vintage recipe boxes. It is definitely a recipe that was passed around. I am amazed though that I have never come … Continue reading The History of Better Than Sex Cake

The History of Jell-O Poke Cake

March 18, 2022August 4, 20224 Comments

The next installment in Bonnie's trip into 1980's food fads is the Jello Poke Cake! I have been racking my brain trying to remember if I have ever had Poke Cake before. I have no idea how I avoided Poke Cakes until now as I was a kiddo in the eighties and nineties. What ingredients … Continue reading The History of Jell-O Poke Cake

I must warn you now, I went down the rabbit hole with popular desserts of the 1980s. I was doing research for a history post and the same few recipes kept popping up over and over. Therefore I had to check them out. So, if you will indulge me for the next few posts, I … Continue reading The History of Chocolate Eclair Cake

1967 Valentine’s Day Pink Punch

February 14, 2022Leave a comment

Here is a perfect punch for Valentine's Day (or anytime a pink-colored punch is needed} which I came across in a 1967 newspaper. According to the article, a lot of readers write in to the paper inquiring about festive love day themed punches around this time of the year. This recipe was the answer to … Continue reading 1967 Valentine’s Day Pink Punch

1962 Christmas Cookies Buffet

December 18, 2021December 21, 20212 Comments

I always try to do a cookie recipe this time of the year because you know Christmas cookies are a thing that people like to do. So when trying to find what cookie recipe that should be, I found a photo of a cookie buffet in the 1962 A Treasury of Holiday Treats: Fabulous Foods from the … Continue reading 1962 Christmas Cookies Buffet

The History of Peanut Blossom Cookies

December 16, 2021December 16, 20213 Comments

This is a cookie that I am quite familiar with and not because Peanut Blossoms were made a lot in my family. It is more that whenever cookies were gifted to us, these cookies inevitably made an appearance. As a kid, these cookies were the best of both worlds as you got a cookie and … Continue reading The History of Peanut Blossom Cookies

1939 Thanksgiving Menu: The Dessert

November 20, 2021November 19, 20212 Comments

Like I mentioned in the introduction post to this menu, the original pie recipe did not work. It was supposed to make two pies but there was enough filling for three. The filling was so liquidy the crust just could not bake resulting in a soggy or really raw bottom. There was either a huge … Continue reading 1939 Thanksgiving Menu: The Dessert

1939 Thanksgiving Menu: The Main Course

November 19, 20215 Comments

Seeing as there were no starters for this menu, let us get right down to the main course. In case you didn't read yesterday's post, I made a Thanksgiving meal from a 1939 menu I found in a newspaper. On the menu were turkey, dressing, giblet gravy, oranged sweet potatoes, creamed onions with cream cheese, … Continue reading 1939 Thanksgiving Menu: The Main Course

1939 Thanksgiving Menu

November 18, 2021December 4, 20211 Comment

Last year I followed a Thanksgiving Menu from the 1970s and the year before a Thanksgiving Menu from 1963. Seeing this is now a tradition on my blog, I decided to do it again. The past two years I picked menus from cookbooks which were Southern Living: Holiday cookbook and Better Homes and Garden Birthday and Family Celebrations. This year the … Continue reading 1939 Thanksgiving Menu

The Gelatin Diaries: Ruby Cranberry Ring

November 12, 2021February 14, 20224 Comments

This is the continuing saga of me trying to figure out the popularity of gelatin recipes from the 1920s to the 1970s. Each month, I randomly pick a recipe from a jar filled with the good, the bad and the savory gelatin recipes to see which ones were worth it and which ones should stay … Continue reading The Gelatin Diaries: Ruby Cranberry Ring

So #retroroulette What’s Cooking prompt this week is one of my favorites. Anything that has to do vintage recipes, kitchens and cookbooks I am hear for! Here is many pictures of my vintage cookbook collection from all through the 20th century. Also my Instagram as well as my blog Quaint Cooking is dedicated to vintage cooking! I love delving into the origins of old recipes or flipping through an old recipe box filled with handwritten recipes cultivated from someone’s life! #vintagecookbooks #vintagecookbook #vintagerecipes #booklover #bookcollector #vintage #1920s #1930s #1950s #1960s #1970s #secondhand #bookstagram #quaintcooking
I will admit that I am not a fan of coconut but I could overlook it for this cake. It is delicious and easy to make yellow cake with a simple broiled coconut frosting. Lazy Daisy cake has been a cake that has had its followers from the 1930s through to the 1970s. If you want to know the history and the origins of the slightly different but very similar version from Quaker Oats while seeing some old advertisements check out my blog. Both recipes are on Quaint Cooking as well! Also let me know if remember or was this a favorite? #lazydaisycake #vintagecakes #classiccakes #cakesofinstagram #bakestagram #coconut #easyrecipes #1930s #1940s #1950s #1960s #1970s #quaintcooking
Bob Newhart is an actor and comedian. Depending on your age, you may know him by his 1960s comedy albums, either of his tv shows The Bob Newhart Show (70s) or Newhart (80s), the movie Elf or from his guest appearances on The Big Bang Theory. On my blog Quaint Cooking, I shared his recipe or rather his wife Ginnie’s recipe for a carrot mold. Don’t worry there is no gelatin anywhere near this for those who run that even the slightest mention! This is baked and has a texture like a corn pudding. Ginnie finished it off with some peas but it could easily be update with lightly dressed mixed greens.
So picture it. It was the mid 1970s in America and Bicentennial fever was starting to take over. There were special coins, stamps, tv programs and museum displays. All around the country, towns and cities celebrated the 200th birthday of the United States. So like any good capitalists nation, brands started using Americana and red, white and blue in their packaging and advertising. One such instant was the McCall’s Great American Recipe Card Collection created to celebrate this occasion with a very 70s-centric view of popular national and regional dishes. On my blog I explained how you could acquire such set in the 1970s as well as old ads from newspapers. Also, if you want to see all the different sections, check out my stories. #1970s #seventies #recipebox #mccalls #americana #bicentennial #recipecards #mccallsgreatamericanrecipecardcollection #vintagerecipecards #vintagerecipebox #kitsch #retro #foodblog #quaintcooking
Today on the blog I posted about cookbook author Grace Zia Chu. She was one of first to teach Americans about Chinese cooking. Starting with classes in New York City and then traveling to do cooking demonstrations around the country. Two cookbooks were published as a result of those classes, The Pleasures of Chinese Cooking (1962) and Madame Chu’s Chinese Cooking School (1975). This was all accomplished after turning fifty and highlights that you can pivot to other opportunities later in life! Check it out on my blog Quaint Cooking. On Quaint Cooking, I posted about the origins of pineapple upside down cake. Check it on out to see some cool old advertisements. As a side note, man did I have so much trouble getting this picture. First somehow I forgot the egg. Luckily it fairly worked out just had more of a crumble to the texture. Then, even though I have made this cake before, this time it wanted to stick. Of course this all happens when I didn’t have an extra can of pineapple to make another cake and of course I was not going to leave the house for one ingredient. Plus I grabbed the blue platter instead of the white one. Though if that is the worst thing for me today then I think I am in pretty good shape. Eventually I will redo it all just not today! #pineappleupsidedowncake #pineapple #maraschinocherries #midcentury #vintage #retro #kitschy #easydesserts #classiccakes #fruit #sweettreats #quaintcooking
