First off when I take a break from social media, I really take a break. My last post was in 2020. Anyways I didn't take a break from my little cooking blog. I have a tradition on Quaint Cooking where I find a Thanksgiving menu from the past and make it. It is a fun (and sometimes tedious) glimpse to how similar yet different the past's approach is to this meal. This year I did a menu from a Cook Index recipe box from 1958. Last year (the second picture) is from a 1939 menu I got from a newspaper and the one that caused me the most trouble. In 2020 (third photo), I did a menu from a 1970s Southern Living cookbook. The last photo is from 2019 and is the menu that started it all. It is from a 1963 Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook. So #retroroulette What’s Cooking prompt this week is one of my favorites. Anything that has to do vintage recipes, kitchens and cookbooks I am hear for! Here is many pictures of my vintage cookbook collection from all through the 20th century. Also my Instagram as well as my blog Quaint Cooking is dedicated to vintage cooking! I will admit that I am not a fan of coconut but I could overlook it for this cake. It is delicious and easy to make yellow cake with a simple broiled coconut frosting. Lazy Daisy cake has been a cake that has had its followers from the 1930s through to the 1970s. Bob Newhart is an actor and comedian. Depending on your age, you may know him by his 1960s comedy albums, either of his tv shows The Bob Newhart Show (70s) or Newhart (80s), the movie Elf or from his guest appearances on The Big Bang Theory. On my blog Quaint Cooking, I shared his recipe or rather his wife Ginnie’s recipe for a carrot mold. Don’t worry there is no gelatin anywhere near this for those who run that even the slightest mention! This is baked and has a texture like a corn pudding. Ginnie finished it off with some peas but it could easily be update with lightly dressed mixed greens.

So picture it. It was the mid 1970s in America and Bicentennial fever was starting to take over. There were special coins, stamps, tv programs and museum displays. All around the country, towns and cities celebrated the 200th birthday of the United States. So like any good capitalists nation, brands started using Americana and red, white and blue in their packaging and advertising. One such instant was the McCall’s Great American Recipe Card Collection created to celebrate this occasion with a very 70s-centric view of popular national and regional dishes. Today on the blog I posted about cookbook author Grace Zia Chu. She was one of first to teach Americans about Chinese cooking. Starting with classes in New York City and then traveling to do cooking demonstrations around the country. Two cookbooks were published as a result of those classes, The Pleasures of Chinese Cooking (1962) and Madame Chu’s Chinese Cooking School (1975). This was all accomplished after turning fifty and highlights that you can pivot to other opportunities later in life! Check it out on my blog Quaint Cooking.
